Students are hitting the books and making it count in the classroom, federal officials announced national graduation rates are on the rise.

The good news, numbers are higher locally too.

Educators say students are working harder and high school graduation levels are moving in the right direction.

National statistics show high school graduation rates have topped out at a record rate of 80 percent and in Pennsylvania they are 84 percent.

Locally, The Erie City School District is seeing a nearly 82 percent graduation rate, beating the national average.

Officials credit new learning techniques and trades that give students hands on involvement in and out of the classroom but officials say they're not completely satisfied with the rates.

In the Millcreek Township District, graduation rates are at a staggering 97 percent.

The numbers are high, but school officials say there is room for improvement.

According to Millcreek officials, when they notice there's a problem they make sure staff works directly with students.
