May 28th, 2014- Construction is set to begin on an $11.5 million addition to the Cathedral Prep Events Center on West 12th Street.
Today was the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Gymnasium and Aquatic Center that will be a 15 month project.
Officials say it's an exciting time as construction will begin much sooner than originally planned.
Bishop Lawrence Persico, Mayor Joe Sinnott, and Father Scott Jabo among many other supporters were at the groundbreaking today.
This project comes just a few years after the construction of the current Cathedral Prep Events Center that was complete in 2010.
The gymnasium will have two, college-size, regulation courts side by side with seating for more than 1,800 people and there will also be a three lane track overlooking the courts.
At the aquatic center, there will be two pools with a seating capacity of more than 500 people.
President of Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria says this is an exciting venture that is underway sooner than expected.
The construction will add 61,000 square feet of new space.
