The city of Erie's fire protection rating was upgraded to nearly the highest rating possible. The insurance service office rated the fire department of the city of Erie at a two. The last rating was a three in 2007 and on a scale of one to ten one is the best.

Only 750 communities nationwide are rated at a two.

Chief Tony Pol explained that his rating plays an important role when it comes to underwriting at insurance companies "The fire department accounts for fifty points, the water department forty points and communications ten. And as the Mayor said we're just two thirds of a point off of one."

Out of 48 thousand communities rated nationwide just sixty of them come in at number one on the rating system.
