Major Changes on Horizon for Waldameer Park

- Big changes are on the horizon for Waldameer Park and Water World.

Waldameer officials presented their plans on Tuesday night for what will be the biggest expansion in the park's history.

The expansion plan for the park includes a wave pool, new ticket stands, a children's area, refreshment stand, restrooms, more parking and stormwater management facilities.

The expansion will also add 100 new summer jobs and some full time employees.

When the project is finished Waldameer will be open seven days a week during the summer.. The park is currently closed on Mondays.

Waldameer officials say they want to stay competitive in the tourism industry.

"Take a look at Conneaut Lake. We don't wanna be another Conneaut Lake, so we have to expand our market. There's been no growth in Erie county in 40 years and so we wanna be bigger and better and draw people in, and tourism is a big growth industry now in Erie,” said Paul T. Nelson, owner of Waldameer Park and Water World.

Waldameer officials presented their land development plan and a rezoning request to the Millcreek Township Planning Commission Tuesday night for their property along Peninsula Drive.

Both requests were approved.

"It was an easy decision primarily because the zoning was taken care of, several, couple years ago, last year and a half ago we took care of getting all the rezoning, proper rezoning for that. And now they're just moving along with the project,” said Gene Strohmeyer, Chairman of the Planning Commission.

This project will take between 5 and 6 years to complete and could cost up to $25,000,000.
