The Joy Senior center opened up last fall and has serve hundreds of senior citizens in our region. It's now facing closure and that’s not sitting well with the members.
More than 200 concerned members of the Joy Senior Center gathered this morning. They voiced their concerns about the closure of the center that they say has helped them grow, meet new friends and learn.
Township supervisors claim the center is too expensive to operate and there are already successful programs in place. In addition, attendance is down.
Township supervisors citied just 1.3 percent of Millcreeks elderly population uses the facility. Joy Center officials say these numbers don't add up as the center is now open 5 days a week and doing better than it has in the past. The members say they feel blindsided and claim supervisors are not cooperating with their demands.
The centers contract with MECA ends August 27th and that means the joy center could be closing its doors for good.
Joy Center officials are looking for a contract extension.
