Shriners Hospital Recipient of $7 Million Gift

June 2, 2014-
Shriners Hospitals for Children - Erie Ambulatory Surgery Center and Specialty Care Center has announced the receipt of a bequest totaling $14,750,000 to be shared equally between the Erie and Cincinnati Shriners facilities. This bequest from the estate of the late Fred H. Burchfield of Sebring, OH, is the largest single gift ever received at the Erie Shriners facility in its 87-year history.
Burchfield, characterized as a humble man and a "jack of all trades," was a member of the Sebring Masonic Lodge and the Tadmor Shriners of Akron, OH. At various times during his life he owned an auto sales lot, a lumber yard, a variety of store, and he was also a carpenter.
"Mr. Burchfield was single and never had children of his own, but he obviously had a soft spot in his heart for the Shriners Hospitals and the work that we do for children," said Jeffrey B. Stephenson of Erie, chairman of the Erie Shriners Board of Governors.

The more than $7 million in funds to be credited to the Erie Shriners facility will be used to advance the mission of Shriners Hospitals to provide expert orthopedic medical care to children regardless of the family's ability to pay.

The announcement of the Burchfield estate bequest was made during a ceremony Sunday afternoon as part of the Erie Shriners annual Community Open House.
