Tonight our Golden Apple Award winning teacher is from Springfield Elementary.
Mr. Dan Christiansen teaches 5th grade at Springfield Elementary School. Preparing his students for life, his class is a balance between learning that's fun and making sure his students have homework.
Mr. "C" says he is driven by watching the academic and social progress of his students.
Dan Christensen, Golden Apple Award Winner, said: "5th grade is a pivotal year to get them ready for middle school and to see them just grow over the year and knowing that you had a part in that, it's the most rewarding aspect of this job. That's what keeps me coming."
Lou Baxter, yourerie.com, said: "Thanks to Mr. C's homework policy students in his classroom feel prepared. And thanks to his discussion of current affairs they feel safe."
Student nominators Ainsley Oliveria and Julianna Elliott, wrote that: "One time Mr. C talked to us after the shooting in Connecticut. He said he would do anything to protect us even if that mean't dying for us. And then recently in Nevada a teacher dies protecting his students from a gunman in school.
Mr. C said: "It's important to offer a honest environment, an open environment. Let them know I'm here for them. Knowing that I've got their back, no matter what. Something happens like that, they gotta get through me first."
Mary Jo Melvin, PhD Edinboro University, said: "When they come into school, we want it to be a safe haven and I think that's what he's doing here. And they respect him for that and they'll do whatever he asks because he's inspired them."
And that's why Ainsley and Julianna join us in recognizing Dan Christiansen as this week's Jet-24, Edinboro University, Golden Apple Award Winner.
