It's a decision.
That's a lesson being taught by an Erie 4th grade teacher who is this week's Golden Apple Award winner.
Lou Baxter has our story tonight from Jefferson School.
Mrs. Darlene Feeney was a student coach at Saint Lukes Elementary School when a a nun asked her what she wanted to do with her life. She said 'be a hair dresser.' The nun suggested she would make a great teacher, and she's never looked back, every day enjoying her 4th graders at Jefferson.
Darlene Feeney, Golden Apple Award winner, said: "They're so excited ... I just enjoy them."
Lou Baxter, yourerie.com, said: "The energy and excitement ... that's by design."
Mrs. Feeney, "I always kinda make the ... enjoy what we're doing."
Mary Jo Melvin, PhD, Edinboro University, said: "She's happy ... and for them be successful for her."
Student nominator Nick Devlin says Mrs. Feeney made him feel welcome when he was forced to transfer from Harding School to Jefferson ... he was nervous.
Nick Delvin, student nominator, said: "Last year they made the rule ... made it easy for you? Um hm."
Mrs. Feeney, "I think that students need ... you build that trust."
"It's building that trust ... care about them."
