124 drug-related deaths in 2017; already 8 suspected this year so far

So far in 2018, Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook suspects eight fatal overdoses but is awaiting toxicology results.

He says a synthetic opiate was responsible for most of last year's deaths.  "But as of today, Erie County had 124 drug deaths that I ruled on. The vast majority of them were from fentanyl."

Recently, Governor Tom Wolf has declared a state of emergency saying, " We mourn their losses and we try to empathize with the pain most of us can not even begin to imagine. But as we do, we understand we also have to act, quickly and decisively to make sure those numbers don't continue to grow."

Wolf signed a declaration to enhance state response, increase access to treatment, and to save lives.
