71 year old exchanges gunfire with police, now in critical condition

State Police are gathered at this hour to update us on a case where an elderly man exchanged gunfire with several troopers.  It happened early Sunday in the 2300 block of Dorn Road in Summit Township.

Pennsylvania State Police were responding to a domestic dispute call when police say the 71-year-old suspect fired at them with a rifle. According to investigators, that's when three officers returned fire, striking the suspect.  A neighbor who heard the gunfire from down the street says he was shocked to learn that the man, who he identified as a former marine, was involved.

Summit Township Resident Laban Marsh says, "I've known him to be a very strong-willed individual, but somebody that was very devoted to this country. So, I was very surprised about hearing the news."

State Police are investigating along with the Erie County District Attorney's Office.  Based on department policy, the three troopers are placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

At last update, the man was still listed in critical condition at UPMC Hamot.
