Multi-vehicle crash closes part of I-90

ERIE, Pa. -- At least 10 vehicles were involved in an accident on Interstate 90 around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

State troopers said they need to all sit down together to figure out the exact amount of vehicles involved in the accident.

Emergency officials said no one was seriously injured in the crash the involved cars and semitrailers near mile marker 27 in the westbound lane of I-90.

The westbound lane of I-90, between Exit 24 and Exit 27, was closed until 6 p.m. Wednesday. PennDOT reduced the speed limit on I-90 to 45 mph due to weather conditions.

Drivers who were involved in the crash said whiteout conditions and slippery road conditions contributed to the accident.

Jeff Heavner, a truck driver, said cars slowed down to 30 mph, but vehicles started sliding, creating a domino effect.

"I was coming in, people were slipping and sliding and moving sideways,” Heavner said. “I wasn't going to hit a car with a family. I hit a semi ... it was probably the scariest thing that's ever happened to me. I had two choices, take out a family or take out a semi. I wasn't about to take out a family, so I took out a semi."

Crews were on scene working on a diesel leak, but officials said that leak was contained.
