Because you Care helps Irma pets

The destruction the multiple hurricanes are leaving behind this season will impact communities for months and possibly years to come.  With that in mind, the Erie region continues to step up and help those in need.

Erie is shifting from Hurricane Harvey to Irma relief.  Everyone from people to the four-legged victims are getting a helping hand, thanks to the generosity of the Erie Community.

Two vans are packed and ready to go, heading to Fort Lauderdale, Florida from Because you Care Animal Shelter to help the four-legged friends left behind during Hurricane Irma.  Kris Steiner of Because you Care tells us, "Unfortunately, many of the pet owners felt that they would not be able to evacuate with their pets. The shelters became overcrowded very quickly with dogs and cats that owners were leaving behind. So, we thought we could help out by bringing some of those dogs up to the Erie area and putting them up for adoption."

Four volunteers from the shelter are bringing 15 dogs back to Erie.  The dogs are set up with foster homes for several weeks until they are fully ready to be set up with their fur-ever homes.

Steiner says, "You look at the disaster that's so far away and you wonder how you can help. This was one way that we could reach out and help all the people and the dogs, which is our concern that are down there."

The New Covenant Christian Center has been collecting items to send to Arcadia, Florida, and they say, once again, the Erie community stepped up.  Bishop Ron Johnson says the "people of Erie are so great.  I want to thank them because without you in the community, we can't do this.  We've been doing this 20 years and the community has not failed us once."

So, the doors are closed and it's time to hit the road to Saint John Missionary Baptist Church.  "This church here, it's going down to Florida, had no help. It's a little town. The pastor was on his knees for two days praying and all of a sudden he gets a call. He didn't know anything about it. They're so elated we're sending this stuff down," Johnson tells us.

Because you Care will be back with the dogs this Sunday.  They say they are in need of donations because the dogs will need vet care.  To help them with their cause, please visit http://www.becauseyoucare.org/donate/.
