Man sentenced in beating death at Millcreek motel

ERIE, Pa. -- A man charged with beating another man to death was sentenced to serve up to 60 years in prison on Monday.

Carl Bell, 35, pleaded guilty in January to brutally beating Charles Lesser, 53, at the Linn-Lee Motel, 3425 W. Lake Road on Jan. 1, 2016. Bell was sentenced on Monday to serve 30 to 60 years in prison for the murder.

Lesser's family said justice was served.

"My heart goes out to his family and that's because they're not the ones that did it,” Lesser's sister, Claudette Hedderick, said. “But, my little brother can smile again and that my family might be able to move on and have closure."

Assistant District Attorney Bobby Marino said he pushed for a stiffer sentence but is satisfied with the result.

"We requested the sentence of 40 to 80 years,” Marino said. “That's what we were going for. But 30 to 60 years, the family has said they are happy with that sentence so I am happy with that sentence.”
