ERIE, Pa. -- A Wattsburg Area School District student who was hit by a car Thursday afternoon has died.
According to a news release from the Wattsburg superintendent, 11-year-old Noah Wion died Friday. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook confirmed Noah died at UPMC Hamot after being taken off of life support.
“The Wattsburg Area School District and community are deeply saddened by the passing of such a wonderful young student and will work with Noah’s family to assist them through this time of grief,” superintendent Kenneth Berlin said.
Police and firefighters were called to Station Road in Greenfield Township just after 3 p.m. for the accident.
According to Pennsylvania State police, a Wattsburg Area School bus was stopped on Station Road near New Road for a student drop off.
An eastbound vehicle hit Noah who had gotten off the bus. Wion was transported to UPMC Hamot.
No charges have been filed at this point on the driver, identified as 18-year-old Hunter Rodland from Erie.
The district and its transportation service provider, Durham School Services, are cooperating fully with the State police who are conducting an active investigation into the accident, Berlin said.
The District’s crisis response team has met with professional consultants from the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit to develop a plan of support for students and staff:
During school, grief counselors and other professionals like school psychologists will be present to assist grieving students. Professional resources will also be made available to any staff member that is struggling.
Going forward, students that need long-term support will have access to counseling through the school’s Student Assistance Program which is staffed with a full-time counseling specialist.
For students that need additional support beyond the school day, the district will assist families in obtaining assistance from community-based agencies.
The family of Noah Wion has started a GoFundMe account to assist with funeral expenses at https://www.gofundme.com/help-with-noahs-funeral-expenses/.
