A new playground is coming soon to the Erie Zoo children's area.
Maleno Development broke ground Thursday on the new "Nature Play" area for children. .
The new playground replaces the old play structure, which Scott Mitchell says was loved by kids, but was worn out.
There will be tree houses and rope walks, all designed to help kids connect with nature.
Natalie Washburn, with Maleno, says, "We've created a really neat playhouse. There's three tree houses that will be joined together by a series of rope bridges, some climbing areas. It's a really great, natural play setting."
Scott Mitchell, Erie Zoo, says "All kinds of research has shown getting kids connected to nature is really important. It makes them more physically fit, they pay attention better, all of those kinds of things. This new area will help do that."
Maleno hopes to begin construction next week and have it completed in four to five weeks.
The new playground is scheduled to be open for kids end of May, early June.
