City Council approves PILOT program, new officers to EPD

Erie City Council passes a payment in lieu of taxes in its meeting Wednesday night for Saint Vincent Hospital.

City Council passes the resolution for the PILOT program unanimously.

The agreement provides a five year term, which started the first of this year and runs through December 31st, 2021.

The agreement also has automatic renewal when it expires unless timely notice is given by either party in the agreement's final year.

The terms commit Saint Vincent to a program based on 50 percent of the assessed value of the scheduled tax exempt properties

Cas Kwitowski, council president, says,  "It's probably one of the better pilots in the whole Commonwealth really. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But for years we've had 50 percent. In conversations with the mayor of Pittsburgh some years ago, they're not even close to our 50 percent."

Erie City Council also approves hiring seven new officers to the police department.

Those new officers will be sworn in Thursday.
