Conneaut police suspect foul play in the death of a one-year old baby

Residents in these Conneaut, Ohio apartments said their complex is like a family, but when tragedy strikes Saturday morning, that all changed.

"It hits close to home. It really does, especially when it's this close to your home really," said Wyatt Durey, a neighbor.

Around 5:15 a.m. emergency services were called to 530 Clark Street for a report of an unresponsive child.
They came to find a one-year old baby.

The infant was then rushed to UHHS Conneaut Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

Authorities said the 22-year old mother and her 37-year old boyfriend are under investigation.

"We'll just investigate it to the fullest and hopefully make somebody responsible for the actions that happened," said Detective Michael Sullivan with the Conneaut Police Department.

Neighbors told us some people in the complex woke up to the mother walking door to door, carrying the baby, asking for a phone to dial 911.

"It's a shame though. I don't even know what to believe because I was just playing with that little girl and she just had a birthday and she just started walking," said Billie Jo Compton, a neighbor.

Investigators said the infant died of cardiac arrest and they suspect foul play is involved.

Authorities told us the body is in the hands of medical examiners to perform an autopsy and no arrests have been made at this time.

But, neighbors still want answers.

"For the rest of the people that live here I just pray that they overcome it. It's a horrible thing," said Brittini Osborne, a neighbor.
