Deadly drug makes its way onto Erie streets

ERIE, Pa. -- Since the beginning of this year, there have been five reported deaths from a drug that's been making its way onto Erie streets.

The drug is called carfentanyl (also spelled carfentanil). One of the most powerful opiate narcotics known to man and it's being sold on the streets of Erie.

"When it comes to carfentanyl, the first time you try it will be the last time you try it,” Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said.

The drug fentanyl comes in a patch and is a synthetic heroin used for maximum pain relief. Fentanyl is 70 times more powerful than morphine but carfentanyl is 4,000 times more powerful than pure morphine. And it will kill you.

“It is so powerful that a lethal dose is measured in atoms,” Cook said. “Two-one hundredths of a million of a gram will kill you.”

Carfentanyl is used as an elephant or large animal tranquilizer. Cook said the drug is so powerful that no amount of Narcan will help in an overdose.
