Historian Douglas Brinkley spoke at Mercyhurst University, as a part of the Global Summit.
He took people through the history of the United States Presidents all the way from George Washington to current President Donald Trump.
He described the last few election cycles as a polarized atmosphere.
He said it's important people understand the changes in not only the process in becoming president but also the way people look at the position.
"You get heard when you scream the loudest, say the most outrageous comment and so unfortunately we're in kind of an ugly media phase now and I don't know when that will sort itself out," said Douglas Brinkley, CNN's Presidential Historian.
Brinkley said someone has to raise nearly a billion dollars to be president, limiting the pool of people able to run.
