ERIE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that an off-duty city of Erie police officer was involved in a fatal crash this weekend.
Police said Wade Schulze, 57, died in the crash on Edinboro Road between Old Route 99 and Greenlee Road, just south of McKean, early Saturday morning.
Cheryl Frey, 46, was airlifted to UPMC Hamot and was listed in stable condition. State police said Frey is an Erie police officer during a news conference Monday afternoon.
State police said after the initial crash, a third car, driven by 35-year-old Danny Hamilton, of Edinboro, hit those two cars. Police said Hamilton fled on foot after the crash and was taken to Millcreek Hospital to have blood drawn under suspicion of driving under the influence.
"Anytime that we're dealing with a fatality, we're making sure that all our T's are crossed and I's are dotted,” state police trooper Wayne Kline said. “And there's a whole lot of things that go into that investigation."
Kline said no charges have been filed at this point. Kline said they need to reconstruct the accident and wait for lab results before they can determine who is at fault and discuss their findings with the district attorney's office.
