Election Day is finally here

Polls are open to cast your vote

Election Day is finally here and the polls are open for you to cast your vote.  Elena LaQuatra joins us now after spending the morning chatting with some of the candidates as they were casting their votes.

Mayoral Candidates, Democratic Nominee Joe Schember and Republican Nominee John Persinger both cast their votes at the GECAC Senior Center as soon as it opened this morning.  Persinger was there with his wife and three young children.  They helped their dad cast his vote.  Schember was there with his wife.

Schember tells us, "The first order of business this year will be to do some very serious planning. I want to hit the ground running on January 1st when I take office and that means doing a lot of planning over the next couple of months."

Persinger says, "For too long we've been cast off, we've been written off by the national media, we've had politicians count us out; that has to change. So, we're going to tell the voters, we're going to tell the people... we're bringing hope to the city again."

Kathy Dahlkemper, Incumbent County Executive, cast her vote this morning at the Martin Luther King Center at Fourth and Chestnut; her grandchildren by her side.  Her opponent, Republican Nominee Art Oligeri stopped by his polling station early this morning to cast his vote.

"I'm happy. I'm just very, very happy. I'm very, very confident." Oligeri says, "I think the people are ready. They're ready for change and it's a new direction for Erie and it's important that they elect new leaders and I'm going to be one of those leaders. I'm going to be someone that will lead them forward... lead Erie County forward."

Dahlkemper tells us, "I think I have a great record to run on. I think people see me as a person of action and someone who works very very hard for the citizens of Erie. I'm here with my grandchildren today. You know, I say it's about the children. That's why I'm doing this. That's why we need to make good policy going forward so that they have that really great, bright future."

A quick reminder that those who were supposed to vote at Belle Valley Fire Department will now vote at Belle Valley Elementary School and though there was severe damage which caused sections around the polling place at St. Paul's Church at 3109 Sterrettania Road that closed, they want to let the public know that this polling location is still open.

If you need a ride to the polls today, the local Democratic and Republican headquarters will be giving rides but you must call the numbers on your screen in advance to request a ride.  Call 814-790-5408 for the Democratic party and 814-314-9130 for the Republican party.
