Erie Events updates latest on Bayfront plans

Erie Events is prepared to seek out developers to put a concept into motion.  Here's the latest on what's happening along Erie's Bayfront.

After extensive clean up, research, and market studies on the former GAF site, the Erie County Convention Center Authority has approved Erie Event's request to start looking for developers.

There are 12.5 acres of land up for grabs, the former GAF Materials Corporation site on Erie's Bayfront.  In September, Erie Events will begin soliciting proposals from private developers interested in revamping the land into the Bayfront Place.  This development plan, put together by architects at Kidder Wachter, calls for a mix of restaurants, retail and housing.

The Coordinator of Communications for Erie Events, Elizabeth D'Aurora, tells us, "we are hopeful that over time that this can become another great asset for the Erie community right along the water...  we have really done our due diligance when it comes to that so we are hopeful that with these RFQ's we can get some interest from developers".

D'Aurora also says the total construction cost could be as high as $300 million, although when complete, Erie Events estimates the project will generate between $7 and $10 million annually in collective property tax revenues.

The details on the RFQ, that's Request for Qualifications, will be made available the first week of September.
