Erie mansion saved from demolition

An historic Downtown Erie mansion is saved from demolition.

Demolition wasn't an option for the William Brooks House on West 6th Street for the Erie County Bar Association.

The Erie County Bar Association purchased two historic buildings on West 6th Street - the Oliver Elliott House and the Williams Brooks House.

According to the Bar Association, built in 1871, the Oliver Elliott House - 429 West 6th Street - was vacant and "falling into disrepair" until the Bar Association purchased it earlier this year.

The Bar Association is renovating both the main house and a carriage house.

However, when the Bar Association bought the Oliver Elliott House, they also purchased the adjoining William Brooks House for more parking on that lot.

The Bar Association says they have no use for the William Brooks House, and the cost to renovate the house was "beyond its means."

Craig Murphey, Bar Association president, says, "[We] got authority from our membership to demolish the building to the west, which is 437 West 6th Street, we didn't want to do that because it is a very attractive structure in a preservation district."

They offered the house to nonprofit, educational, governmental and other entities, however, no bites.

So they then started hunting for the perfect developer for the house.

Friday, the Bar Association announcing Hoffman United as the company to take over the house.

Paul Hoffman, Hoffman United president, says, "I'm looking forward to preserve the historic value mainly to the exterior but also to the remodel the interior to multi-family apartment units and to just make it an asset to the Erie community again."

Hoffman United plans to turn the house into at least five residential apartments - potentially six, depending on what the architects can do on the third floor of the house.

The Bar Association hopes to have renovations to the Oliver Elliott House this fall. Hoffman United is unsure of when the William Brooks House will be complete, but looks forward to getting to work.
