Erie Philharmonic kicks off season with Beat Beethoven 5k

The Erie Philharmonic kicks off the 2016-17 season with the 6th annual Beat Beethoven 5K

The race allowed runners to try and beat the completion of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony like previous years.

Only this year, the orchestra performed it live during the race.

Also new this year is a one mile walk.

Executive Director of the Erie Philharmonic says around 20 vendors and food trucks filled Perry Square for the big kick off, and a record high of more than 200 participants in the race.

Steve Weiser says, "That's what we want to see when you can tie in a free concert for the community as the same day as opening night, which is our concert tonight. It's a great way to sort of take over the town for a little bit."

The philharmonic opens its hip hop season Saturday night at the Warner Theatre with "Every Breath You Take," featuring music by Sting and The Police.
