Erie Police Department Brings Back Bike Patrol

Two officers patroling downtown Erie on Bikes

ERIE, Pa - May 9, 2017 - Two Erie Police Officers are now a part of the bicycle patrol. These officers help provide extra coverage, assisting other crews, with a focus on community oriented policing. They will provide closer contact with the public to potentially help identify and solve any problems that may occur.
Six officers total have gone through training to provide them with the skills necessary to safely and effectively use a bicycle to perform a full range of police patrol duties, from basic bike handling skills to negotiating obstacles,  performing high-speed dismounts, and suspect apprehension techniques.
But what the officers like the most about being out on the streets on a bike is the reaction from the community.
The two officers work two shifts, an eight to four and 12 to eight shift, that's 12 hours of coverage to the downtown.
They are patrolling from the Bayfront to 14th street, east to west from Holland to Sassafras.
