'Exceptional' UPMC Hamot nurses honored

ERIE, Pa. -- UPMC Hamot and The Daisy Foundation celebrated nursing staff at the hospital Friday morning.

Two registered nurses, Kara Knight and Joshua Bickford, were presented The Daisy Award for Exceptional Nurses after being nominated by patients, families or staff.

The international program was established in November 1999 by Mark and Bonnie Barnes. The founders wanted to honor the memory of their son, J. Patrick Barnes, and recognize the nurses who cared for him.

Patrick Barnes died at age 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).

"We started this foundation 17 years ago when my step-son, Patrick, died of complications an autoimmune disease... passed away in Seattle, Washington, said Bonnie Barnes, co-founder and president of the Daisy Foundation.

“But we knew that the experience that we had with nurses there must be who nurses are around the world. So, we needed to say 'thank you.'"

The foundation has a presence in all 50 states and 14 other countries.
