Garbage truck slams into building

Happened at West 18th and Cherry Streets

A west side barber shop is destroyed after a garbage truck slams into a building.

According to witnesses and police, the refuse truck was trying to avoid hitting a car that ran a red light at West 18th and Cherry Street; that sent the truck right into the corner of Ruiz Barber Shop.

The building sustained extensive damage.  Code enforcement officers were on the scene to help remove the truck late this morning, making sure the building would not collapse.

Officers say the structure is being supported and can be rebuilt.  Andy Zimmerman, Code Enforcement Officer, said, "its really a shame for that business; that barber shop was a staple for that community and we want to do the best we can to get it fixed up".  This is the fourth time Zimmerman says he has witnessed a vehicle run into that building.

No one was hurt in the accident.

"Unfortunately, we had this little accident; but all in all, the best thing is no one got hurt, and I'll just keep everybody posted," said Barber Shop owner, Cesar Ruiz.) Ruiz said the barber shop could take at least a month before it re-opens at the current site, but the salon in the rear of the building was not damaged.
