Gas tax to increase 8 cents per gallon starting Jan. 1

ERIE, Pa. -- Drivers will ring in the new year with a rising gas tax.

The cost of gas in Pennsylvania is going up again. This time 8 cents per gallon.

This is the third and final increase part of a bill – Act 89 –  that was passed in 2013 to help fund road and bridge repairs. The average price of gas in Pennsylvania is $2.40 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.com

That's already higher than the national average of nearly $2.22, and it's going up even more Jan. 1

"Yeah that's not good,” Teri Weidler of Waterford said. “It's high enough as it is."

Despite the increase, Joel Rammelt, whose family travels from New York to Erie frequently, said it won't deter them from traveling to the Keystone state.

"We come here anyway to shop,” Rammelt said. “I live close to the line and it's just convenient."
