Girard Fire Department burns building for volunteer training

Smoke, flames and fire crews, that's what an old church in Girard looked like today.

A former Lutheran church, used by Mercyhurst University as an extension campus, stood vacant for several years.

Now, it's being used to train and prepare volunteer firefighters.

O'Reilly's Auto Parts donated the building to the Girard Fire Department so they could use it for practice.

Volunteer firefighters got to fight a real, controlled fire today, so they're more prepared when they're called to the real deal.

More than 20 volunteer firefighters from multiple fire departments attended a controlled structure burn class to get real-life experience on how to handle a burning building.
