Gymnastics event pumps money into Erie

ERIE, Pa. -- The 16th annual Stars and Stripes Coed Gymnastics Invitational, presented by the Erie Gymnastics Center and Team Lightning features nearly 1,800 athletes at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie.

Over four days, men and women, from ages 5 to 22, will compete in 10 levels for individuals awards.  The teams with the top gymnasts will receive team trophies.

The event began in February 2002, just months after the September 11, 2001 attacks. The event became a tribute to the nation’s heroes.

The meet has grown to represent 55 teams from Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Ontario, Canada.

Thousands of visitors to the region translates to dollars, according to organizers.

“Last year, in 2012, this was estimated to generate over $1 million for the Erie economy,” said Doug Pershun, meet director for Stars and Stripes Coed Gymnastics Invitational.

“So, this year, with it being a little bigger and better, it’s even more an impact.”

The event began Friday, Jan. 13 and runs through Monday, Jan 16.
