Humane Society seeks help for pregnant dog shot by police

ERIE, Pa. -- The Humane Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania is seeking help after a pregnant dog was shot by a police officer last week.

Sadie, a 4-year-old lab/pit bull mix, is days away from giving birth but needs major surgery following the incident with Albion police last week.

The Albion police chief said officers were called to a neighborhood for three aggressive dogs running through the streets while children were waiting for a school bus. After a lengthy chase with the dogs, an officer shot Sadie in the right leg as she was running away. Officers were not able to locate her.

A few days later, she was found and brought to the Humane Society for treatment. Sadie needs a leg amputation because the bullet is still inside her leg. However, the surgery will kill the puppies.

So, delivery needs to come before the amputation.

The Humane Society is looking for foster homes to take care of the puppies once they are born because Sadie will be undergoing emergency surgery and unable to nurse them.

"It is really hard on the shelter to have special needs animals,” Nicole Bawol, executive director of the Humane Society, said. “At this point, this one is requiring us to do a special surgery to have that amputation done, so we are truly appreciative of anyone who is able to make a donation to the shelter to really help support Sadie.”

If you are interested in fostering one of the puppies contact the Humane Society, however, you do need a lot of time because they will need to be bottle fed every couple hours.
