J.C. Penney closing 138 stores, Erie location saved

ERIE, Pa. -- In the past year, major retail chains in Erie have announced they will close their doors for good.

On Friday, one anchor store at the Millcreek Mall learned it will stay.

J.C. Penney announced that the company will close 138 stores nationwide to help sustain long-term profitability, however, the J.C. Penney at the Millcreek Mall is not one of the stores to get the ax.

Seven stores in Pennsylvania will be impacted by the closings. Stores in Bloomsburg, Clearfield, King of Prussia, Philadelphia, Towanda, Pennsdale and Willow Grove will all be shuttered.

The closings are expected to impact 5,000 jobs nationwide, most of which will occur in June, a company news release said.

Most affected stores will begin the liquidations process April 17.

The report comes after two well-known Erie retailers learned their stores will close.

Sears, which was an original tenant when the Millcreek Mall opened, announced in September that it would close. Boscov's announced shortly after that it would move into the two-story, 140,000 square-foot-space.

Erie's HHGregg is among 88 stores that will close nationwide. That statement was made on March 2.
