It was announced today that the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and the Playhouse will join forces. They have entered into a naming-rights agreement for 25 years to refer to the Playhouse stage as the, 'LECOM Stage at the Playhouse'.
This name will be displayed on the facade on West 10th Street. This was a decision by the Playhouse to say "thank you" to LECOM for all they have done for the local theater throughout the years. Most recently, LECOM helped the Erie Playhouse raise the rest of the money they needed ($500,000) for a major $1.4 million renovation project, which sparked gratitude from the theater.
Almitra Clerkin, Playhouse Executive Director, says, "LECOM has gone above and beyond with their commitment to arts and culture in Erie. LECOM addresses the health of our community beyond the medical. By supporting arts and culture that is vital to Erie's quality of life, LECOM is ensuring the future of the Playhouse for generations to come."
LECOM has also said in a statement, "The Erie Playhouse is dedicated to enriching the lives of residents in the greater Erie region by providing life-long opportunities to participate in quality theatrical productions as artists, audience members, and advocates."
In addition to their statement, LECOM President, John M. Ferretti, says, "LECOM is ever eager to advance community betterment and to develop our local economy by expanding the tangible and intrinsic benefits of the arts to our students and citizens, alike... We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the arts community ensuring that the illumination of our community remains forever bright."k
The renovation of the Playhouse and the LECOM Stage at the Playhouse will begin on July 31st, with a completion date of October 5th. The opening show to unveil the changes will also celebrate coming in to their 101st season, a "second century," with the hit musical, 'Mamma Mia'.
The renovation project sees many updates including new digital stage lighting, a handicapped restroom on the stage level, a new HVAC system, and more.
The statement from the Playhouse says, "with the new outdoor sign above the marquee, playhouse patrons and visitors in Downtown Erie passing by the Playhouse will be reminded of the generous support of LECOM for the arts and for helping maintain a robust community theater in the heart of the city."
The Playhouse will still continue to perform throughout the updates. For now, you can catch the famous musical, 'Oklahoma!' on stage, and for tickets and more information, you can visit their website at http://www.erieplayhouse.org/shows-events.
Congratulations to the Playhouse and LECOM on joining together to provide great services to our community.
