Local students compete in international Lego competition

Lots of children play with Legos, but some local students are learning to invent with them.

Luther Memorial Academy's FIRST Lego team is heading to St. Louis, Missouri to represent Northwest, Pennsylvania in an internation competition.

The group of eight students won first place in a regional competition at Penn State Behrend. Their coach tells us the program teaches students how to work with others and innovate at a young age.

"It teaches them how to work together as a team. It teaches them that there's not an I in team. They cannot accomplish what they have so far working as individuals. It has to be as participating as a team," the team's coach Kim Evans said.

This year's theme is "Animal Allies."

The robot has to complete tasks that show how people and animals work together.
