Man charged with starting car fires at Eddie's Collectibles

ERIE, Pa. -- A man was arrested after allegedly lighting several cars on fire at Eddie's Collectibles and threatening to burn the entire place down over the weekend.

Timothy McBride, 65, of Ripley, N.Y., is behind bars after police said he threatened Eddie Whiteman of Eddie's Collectibles, 1039 W. 18th St., and trespassed onto his property and then set several cars on fire.

Whiteman said he was sitting in his office around 3:30 a.m. Saturday when he heard a pop. He said he ran over to his monitoring system and saw flames shooting into the air.

"Looking at the surveillance he was hiding behind the telephone pole,” Whiteman said. “If he would've had a firearm he could've shot me at anytime, but he did laps around the property. Just stocking. The man was just bizarre."

The three parked cars that were on fire were just feet from a home where Whiteman said a mother and her kids live. His first instinct was to tow the cars away from the home so that it didn't also catch fire.

Whiteman said McBride had been threatening him for days before the fire after Whiteman towed his car for Erie police.

Whiteman said McBride was angry that he had to pay to get his car back and multiple times threatened to send the business up in flames.

Erie police are still investigating what McBride used to start the fire.

None of the cars that were set on fire were McBride's. The cars belonged to other customers of Eddie's Collectibles.

McBride is in the Erie County Prison on charges of arson, criminal mischief, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, possessing an instrument of crime and criminal trespassing.
