Mayor Sinnott responds to Persinger push

It's been one week since John Persinger, the republican candidate for Mayor, called upon Mayor Sinnott to apply for a large grant.  Tonight, the Mayor is responding.

In a statement, Erie Mayor, Joe Sinnott, says, "the city has always and continues to pursue the grant opportunities that are best suited to the projects and programs we are engaged in, in this community.  Those are the ones we have the best opportunity of receiving.  We do not now, and will not in the future, respond to campaign rhetoric by political candidates."

Persinger asked Mayor Joe Sinnott to enter the city of Erie in to the Bloomberg Philanthropies 2017 Mayor's Challenge.  The challenge claims over the next three years, Bloomberg Philanthropies will award a total of $200 million to American cities to combat blight, gun violence and the opioid crisis.

Persinger says, "We have a number of plans that have been released.  The comp. plan, the downtown plan... all of those talk about outside investment to help.  Here is a creative way to get outside money into the city."

We reached out to his opponent in the mayoral election, Joe Schember.  Schember says, if elected, he would look into Grants that would go along with the city's refocused plan.  He doesn't believe this program is one of them.
