Millcreek supervisors discuss zoning for marijuana dispensary

ERIE, Pa. -- After a high-volume of interest, Millcreek Township supervisors discuss possible locations to grow and sell medical marijuana.

During a special township meeting Monday morning, supervisors discussed amending current zoning ordinances to facilitate medical marijuana.

As a state deadline of March 20 looms for anyone who wants a permit to grow or sell, the township needed to determine where they could locate.

A grower can locate in an industrial zone, including an industrial park. A dispensary could locate in a commercial district in a high-traffic area including Peach Street,  West 26th Street, West 12th Street and Wattsburg Road.

"We need to designate specific areas for the location of a dispensary or growing operation for medical marijuana,” supervisor Brian McGrath said. “We don't want to be caught in a situation where one of those two organizations could come in and locate anywhere in the township, which is what would happen if we didn't take this action.”

These recommendations will be sent to county planning and the Millcreek Planning Commission.

Supervisors will make a final vote on March 14.
