One woman's story of her choice to undergo a double mastectomy

A breast cancer diagnosis can be devastating; a local woman knows that all too well after watching her mother go through treatment. But, she took extreme measures to make sure she never hears those heart breaking words.

Amanda Kochirka lost her mother to cancer at 30 years old.  She's already gone through genetic testing and knowing her possible fate, she went through a preventative, radical double mastectomy and reconstruction.

Kochirka tells us, "for me, when I found out I had the BRCA 1 mutation it really took breast cancer in my life from a matter of 'if' to a matter of 'when'".

It was a tough decision and it took years for Amanda to make it, but now she rests easy knowing she took her odds of getting breast cancer from 85 percent or more... to about ten.
