Prep looks to avenge loss in state title rematch

HERSHEY, Pa. -- For the Cathedral Prep football team, Thursday night's Class 4A title game is a chance at redemption.

The Ramblers (13-0) left Hershey Park Stadium in 2015 disappointed and embarrassed after a 37-point loss in the state championship game.  But on Thursday, not only will they have a chance to avenge that loss in a rematch with Philadelphia's Imhotep Charter (13-0), they will be playing for someone who can't.

When the Ramblers accepted the runner-up trophy a year ago, then sophomore Ian Malesiewski was there wearing his No. 40 jersey, but that would be the final football game he'd play.

A freak accident on the wrestling mat in June left Malesiewski paralyzed. But it left his teammates and friends more motivated than ever.

"There's no other dude like Ian,” junior quarterback Joe Mischler said. “ He's fighting something bigger than football. We just want to go out there and play like he would on the football field because we know he'd kill for one more down of football and I feel like it's just melded this team together from the beginning of this season on.”

Malesiewski is not expected to be at the game Thursday, but you can bet he'll be watching closely. His older brother, Adam, is a wide receiver for the Ramblers.

Kick off between the Ramblers and the Panthers is set for 7 p.m.
