Project Prom launches first giveaway of the season

With the cost of gowns on the rise, one local woman wanted to make sure every girl could afford to go to prom.

In 2013 Lisa Bannister started Project Prom, a company that collects gowns year-round, and donates them to girls during prom season.

"It's a big deal to these girls, especially if they can't afford a dress, the looks on their face when they actually find a dress is priceless," Bannister said.

Community members have collected several hundred gowns this year. The first prom dress giveaway event was March 19 at the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel.

The organization also made a big announcement Sunday's event.

"I will be opening a store front that'll be running all year long starting the end of April," Bannister said.

Project Prom's year-round location will be on 26th Street. In addition to prom dresses, they say they'll also carry homecoming and wedding gowns.

The next prom dress giveaway event will be on March 26 at the Avalon Hotel.
