Rare bird spotted at Presque Isle

The piping plover has finally made an appearance in Erie

A well known area of Presque Isle has bird watchers excited after two pairs of piping plovers were spotted.

The federally endangered apecies hasn't been spotted in the Erie basin since 1977.  The Pennsylvania Game Commission hopes this means the rare birds have returned for good to Lake Erie, but it hasn't been easy.

Two piping plover chicks have already hatched locally while eggs from a second nest were recovered after being knocked over by waves.  Those eggs were shipped to the University of Michigan where they were hatched.

The Game Commission hopes to release those chicks on Lake Michigan in August.
