Roof Collapse Displaces 5 People, Red Cross Helps

The weight of our record breaking snowfall proved to be too much for one roof in Erie tonight.

Firefighters were called to 1156 East 27th Street just after 5:30 this evening. What they found was a two story multi-unit building with a roof collapse. There were no injuries reported but the Red Cross is helping five people who live there. The city's top code enforcement official says the east side of this roof gave way due to the snow and ice. He's urging everyone to be vigilant in the days ahead.

"Especially with warmer weather coming and the rain that's coming, it's gonna get heavy.  With the sun we've had melting the snow, turning it to ice...you really want to pay attention, really want to check your roofs," said Andy Zimmerman, City of Erie Code Enforcement.

Zimmerman wants you to look for any cracks or damage on rafters or trusses and check the amount of ice build up on your roof.
