School district receives over $600,000 to combat addiction

Today a local school district is awarded a grant to help combat the problem of addiction.  Iroquois School District receiving a federal grant worth $624,000 over a five year period.  

About three years ago, three Iroquois district graduates overdosed on heroin.  That tragedy inspiring a coalition forum to address the problem of addiction and substance abuse in the Lawrence Park and Wesleyville communities.  

Maria Modzelewski, Psychologist at Iroquois School District, says, "The concerns in this community of Lawrence Park and Weslyville are very similar to those of communities across the nation.  And it is a concern... youth are reporting a higher level of use/substance abuse than they have in the past."

Officials at the school district say although this grant is intended for Lawrence Park and Wesleyville, and they expect their efforts to help the surrounding areas, as well.
