Shawn Smith charged in homicide

Chief Dacus has confirmed that a man named Shawn Smith, 33, has had charges filed against him for the homicide of DeAndre Carter, 28, of Erie.

Carter was shot on Sunday, April 30th at a tavern on 4th and Plum streets and was transferred to Pittsburgh Presbyterian UPMC Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Chief Dacus said, "they tracked down several witnesses to try and explore all possible leads and tighten up their case but ultimately it was good police work that ultimately resulted in an arrest."

Carter's girlfriend tells us the last few months have been a struggle, thinking about the future he could've have.  She says nothing will bring Carter back, but at least they have comfort in knowing the man who shot him is already behind bars.

After more than two months of unanswered questions, 28 year old DeAndre Carter's loved ones finally have a bit of peace.  Carson, Carter's girlfriend  tells us, "Living day to day not knowing if this person's still on the street, why this person's not suffering like our family has been suffering. It's been very, very hard but I'm glad today we were finally able to get some closure."

Police charged 33-year old Shawn Smith with Carter's murder today.  Chief Don Dacus tells us several witnesses say after an altercation broke out near West Fourth and Plum Streets near the Ulta View Lounge, Smith took out his firearm and took several hitting Carter in the chest.

Smith admitted to firing shots that night. Carter died a few days after the shooting in a Pittsburgh hospital.

Police tell us there are no other suspects and they're confident they have the right guy.

Carson added, "It's sad that an innocent person's life was taken away for a senseless act of violence that should never even have occurred but I'm happy that he is behind bars."  She tells us his family is still grieving, but relieved to see justice served.

About 20 minutes after the shooting on April 30th, police say Smith fired random shots at another location in Erie.

No one was injured in the second shooting, and Smith had already been arrested in that case.
