Stranger reaches out to mother and daughter who lost everything

A single mother and daughter are left homeless with only their car and the clothes on their backs after a devastating fire in Ohio.  Emily Wood has the story of how a stranger's act of kindness is helping this family in need.

No longer strangers, Kristen McKenzie says she had to meet Brittany Richardson and her 9-year-old daughter, Zyaire, after seeing their story of survival on the news.  That's when Kristen heard Brittany say she lost "everything.  I don't have nothing but what I have on and my keys and that's it.  I don't have anything."

Brittany and Zyaire had to jump from the second-floor balcony of Towerview Apartments to escape the early morning fire.  It was a terrifying moment for both mom and daughter and left Kristen in tears as she watched from home.

Kristen tells us, "She just looked devastated. She looked like she was so lost and just didn't know where to turn and I just started crying."  Kristen says she immediately knew she had to do something and wanted to connect with the Richardsons.

Zyaire and her mom also received a generous donation of gift cards to help them start fresh, spend some quality time together and renew their faith in the kindness of others.  Brittany says, "It's not too often that I feel like people help and for her reaching out to two people that she doesn't even know just like warms my heart."

And, Zyaire says, "I feel great because the fire was really scary so when my mom, she really helped me out and this lady, she really helped us."

The Richardsons are staying with the family while they search for a new apartment.  They say they do plan to stay in touch with their new friend.
