Summer health tips, Cleveland clinic

Aaahhh, summer... that time of year to get outside and enjoy the sun's rays.  But, not too much.   Remember, a fun time can be hampered if you get a nasty sunburn, or get dehydrated.

Nothing says summer fun like taking the whole family to the local zoo or amusement park.  And, planning ahead can keep everyone quenched and ready to enjoy the day.  

Lindsay Malone, Registered Dietitian for Cleveland Clinic says, "The best thing to do if you're out with your family, is bring or refill your water bottle. So many places are going to have restrictions on bringing bottled water in, but if you have your own water bottle by law, they're required to have water fountains, and so you can just fill it up."

Remember to watch out for the sun.  If you have kids, you know getting a squirming child to sit still for sunscreen can be a real challenge, so get them involved.  Dr. Melissa Piliang of Cleveland Clinic adds, "The thing I like best for the face are the sticks; those waxy sticks  especially for kids and really, you can hand it to the child and let them do it themselves." 

Spray-on sunscreens work well on kids, and if you get them used to spraying it on themselves, it becomes a habit.  And, when they get older, they'll be more likely to continue using sunscreen.  

There are other options, too.  Piliang continues, "There are alternatives to sunscreen. The sunscreen clothing or the clothing with sun protection in it can be very helpful. That, you don't have to reapply; you don't have to worry about missing spots; you put it on once and you leave it on."
