ERIE, Pa. -- Jury selection is currently underway for the murder trial of Torriano Beard.
Beard, 39, is charged with the shooting death of Jemar Phillips, 35, in a parking lot outside of the Last Stop Cafe at West 18th and Raspberry streets on Feb. 24. During the preliminary hearing, Erie police testified that witnesses saw Beard unload a revolver into Phillips while wearing a red fur vest.
Erie police recovered that vest and found gunshot residue on it. Opening arguments will begin once a jury is selected.
A second man wanted in connection with the murder was arrested on Jan. 6. Erie police arrested Lavance Kirksey, 24, after police said a gun used in the homicide was linked back to Kirksey after the gun was recovered by police during a separate shots-fired incident in August.
