The Erie Community raises more than $4.4 million on Erie Gives Day, with nearly 7,700 folks making donations.
There were two organizations who were shocked by the number of people who though of them on Erie Gives Day. "I was speechless," says Ruth Thompson, Founder of the Anna Shelter. "Just overwhelmingly humbled is the best way I can put it."
Stephan Westbrook, Executive Director of Erie City Mission, says simply, it "blew our minds".
For 106 years, the Erie City Mission has restored hope and transformed lives in the name of Jesus Christ. Westbrook said they're "so proud... what makes us most proud is the number of donors and the broad support for the mission." There were 526 donors to the Mission, raising nearly $90,000. The money will be going to support what the non-profit does every day; providing shelter, care, food, and hope to those in need."
"We work primarily with homeless individuals," explains Westbrook, "Individuals with addictions, and in various stages of poverty."
Following in a close second for numbers of donors was the Anna Shelter. So, it's not just humans who are benefiting from Erie's generosity. In fact, Thompson wouldn't have it any other way, "if it doesn't benefit the animals," she says, "I don't need it."
The Anna Shelter takes in unwanted, stray, or neglected animals and finds them new homes. "What, in most shelters, would be considered not adoptable and be euthanized, they stay here," says Thompson. The no-kill shelter, founded by the Erie native isn't associated with any national organization or non-profit, so making ends meet is sometimes challenging.
"We have literally been, by the grace of God, making it work on the little bit of resources that we have," says Thompson. The good news? The more than $40,000 raised by 473 donors will be used as a cushion fund. "To be able to put some of that aside and know that it's there, will literally save me some sleepless nights."
Both non-profits wanted to tell the collective thousand folks who donated to them, many, many thanks for supporting their missions.
