City Council Approves $69 Million 2014 Budget

Mayor Joe Sinnott's $69 million budget unanimously passed at the city council meeting this morning.
December 18, 2013 - Erie City Council passed the 2014 budget which officially means city residents will see an increase in sewer and refuse fees.

Mayor Joe Sinnott's $69 million budget unanimously passed at the city council meeting this morning.

Garbage fees increase from $192 a year to $220 a year and sewer fees jump from $246 to $281.80.

It's the first time in four years the sewer and refuse fees have gone up.

Council adopted a resolution known as a “sunset provision” to make sure the increases only effect the 20-14 year unless extended by council.

Some council members are in favor of the “sunset provision,” while others think it gives city residents false hope.

“To tell the taxpayers that there's a possibility you could pay less knowing we have these bills in front of us due, is irresponsible," said Bob Merski, Jr.

"We're not saying it's going to go away, we're just saying we're going to be pushed to make decisions and look closely and put techniques in place to prevent future increases," said Jessica Horan-Kunco.
