Coroner Confirms Prison Inmate Dies from Drug Mix

The Erie County Coroner has ruled in the case of an area prison inmate who apparently overdosed while behind bars in May.

The first story ran on JET 24 a month ago.

Coroner Lyell Cook confirms the 35-year-old inmate died from a lethal mix of two drugs but would not confirm what the drugs were.

Cook did say one was a prescription medication and the other was a non-prescription.

He says the cause of death was accidental and due to “combined drug toxicity”.

The prescription drug was not prescribed to the inmate and the inmate died at upmc hamot hospital on May 5th.

The District Attorney investigating how the inmate got the drugs, and we contacted the Director of Administrations Office but they say they have not seen the Coroner's report.

 Until they do, and have had a chance to review it, they are not prepared to make any kind of statement.
